Building Mandarin foundations through curiosity, discovery & child development. WenLin’s Mandarin Bud I is a Mandarin Chinese class for Reception-age children (4–5) in Clapham, carefully designed around both language development and how children learn and grow at this age. This is where children begin building the strong foundations needed for long-term Mandarin learning – but without turning Chinese into a traditional classroom subject too early. Our curriculum connects Mandarin with children’s natural curiosity and the world around them. Seasonal changes, nature, animals, family, emotions, festivals, simple science, numbers, art, making and other age-appropriate themes become meaningful contexts for children to explore and use Chinese. Through stories, games, movement, creative projects, simple STEM investigations and hands-on discovery, children develop listening, speaking, vocabulary, thinking and communication skills while using Mandarin as part of the experience. Children also begin systematic Chinese character recognition, exploring character shapes, components and meaning to build strong foundations for future reading and writing. We focus on understanding Chinese characters naturally at this stage rather than rushing children into pinyin. Mandarin Bud I is part of WenLin’s continuous learning pathway, progressing year by year through primary and secondary Mandarin towards GCSE Chinese and advanced HSK proficiency. ✓ Reception age 4–5
